COOPERSBURG, PA — Lutron Electronics, the trusted leader in lighting controls, announced the results of its first-ever Lighting Trend Report. The new study, informed by findings from a recent Lutron/Harris Poll survey as well as leading designer insights and Lutron’s expertise, reveals that U.S. homeowners consider lighting one of the most important design choices for their home and forecasts anticipated trends for 2023 and beyond.

The first-of-its-kind report highlights the industry’s growing demand for modern, high-quality lighting solutions, with 91% of U.S. homeowners reporting that quality lighting is important to their home design and 75% reporting that lighting is one of the most important design choices for their home, according to the Lutron/Harris survey.

While homeowners generally consider the importance of furnishings and decor when styling a space, light is a fundamental element that is too often overlooked. “Light brings atmosphere and can enhance not only the aesthetic of a home but how we look, feel, and live within it,” says Cecilia Ramos, Lutron’s Senior Director. “With the launch of our first trend report, we’re excited to dig into first-hand consumer sentiments about what’s motivating the demand for innovative new lighting solutions – and explore the shift in thinking about how lighting can shape our experiences within the home.”

Here are some key findings from the report:

Bringing the outside in

82% of U.S. homeowners say that it’s important to have a connection to nature in their daily lives – and an even higher 87% of U.S. homeowners think a connectedness to nature is important in their home design. One of the most important ways to support this connection is through natural light—both sunlight, as well as the latest LED solutions that mimic the changing color temperature and intensity of sunlight throughout the day.

Creating a relaxing retreat

The vast majority of U.S. homeowners (90%) say that it’s important that their home help them relax and disconnect from work and/or the outside world. This post-pandemic mentality supports rising “resimercial” (combining residential and commercial components) trends like spa-inspired bathrooms and resort-like backyards, as Americans look to replicate the inspiration and relaxation they’ve found at luxury hotels into their own homes.

For many, the key to relaxing at home is creating the right ambiance – and light has emerged as a core factor in doing so, with almost 4 in 5 U.S. homeowners (78%) saying the ability to adjust lighting is one of the most important factors to creating ambiance within a home. Control options from Lutron allow you to create custom settings like dimming to a warm glow to mimic candlelight.

A glow up for closets and bathrooms

Even though the majority of homeowners say lighting is one of the most important design choices in their space, nearly one in five (19%) of U.S. homeowners are not happy with the lighting in the rooms they use to get ready in. For luxury homes in particular, “glam rooms” have become a popular trend as a growing number of Lutron clientele and other homeowners take walk-in closets to the next level with entire rooms dedicated to getting ready. Innovative LED products like illuminated mirrors and lighted closet rods are gaining more popularity when designing a well-lit space.

Prioritizing eco-friendly choices

Over 4 in 5 U.S. homeowners (81%) want to reduce their impact on the environment and are willing to invest in eco-friendly options to do so. With proper smart and automated lighting, a home can be optimized to save energy and reduce waste. On average, LED light bulbs last 50 times longer than a typical incandescent and use at least 75% less energy, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Beyond the sustainable benefits of automation, thoughtfully programmed lighting can also elevate homeowners’ routines to make their days more convenient and comfortable. So it should come as no surprise that nearly 4 in 5 U.S. homeowners (78%) would invest in LED lighting to help limit their carbon footprint.
