The Benefits of switching your Parking Lot lights to LED
First impressions are everything. Parking lots are often the first impression for your customers or visitors when they arrive at your establishment. With that being said, parking lots are often overlooked when it comes to general upkeep and overall appearance. One of the easiest and most cost efficient ways to give your parking lot a facelift is to improve its lighting.
For years, outdoor parking areas have been illuminated by High-intensity discharge (HID) fixtures. In recent years, there has been a rapidly growing trend to switch out these old HID fixtures with new LED fixtures. The reason for this change is to due the many downfalls of HID; The glaring issues being that HID is not aesthetically pleasing, they consume a significant amount of power, their overall light quality is low, and they’re more expensive to maintain.
On the other hand, LED parking lot lights consume significantly less power, require zero maintenance, and they provide an overall better quality of light, which makes them the best alternative to HID fixtures. Outdoor LED fixtures, such as canopy lights, wall packs, area lights, flood lights, and dusk to dawn lights can last up to 90,000 hours longer than
HID and consume up to 90% less power than HID fixtures. Meaning that your typical payback period is less than two years!
The light that a HID Fixture produces can range from natural white color to orange depending on the type of bulb you’re using. HID fixtures also tend to have a low color-rendering
index (CRI), which is a quantitative measure of the ability of a light source to reveal the colors of various objects faithfully in comparison with an ideal or natural light source. The CRI for a HID bulb can range anywhere from 0 to 65. Lastly, HID fixtures emit light that is multidirectional and it is often wasted on undesired areas.
Throughout their entire lifetime, LED parking lot fixtures maintain the same natural white or cool white color. LED fixtures are also capable of having CRIs of 80 and higher. Lights with a CRI of 80 or higher are considered to show colors most accurately and
increase visibility. A higher CRI in parking lot fixtures is key to your properties security and safety. In addition, LED fixtures are able to deliver focused light with less glare to ensure that you’re lighting desired areas.
In conclusion, the best and most cost efficient way to upgrade your parking lot is to replace your HID parking lot lights with new LED parking lot fixtures. The benefits of making the switch to LED include energy savings, minimal maintenance, life longevity, safety, brightness and color quality. These benefits alone outweigh the upfront cost it would take to buy and install new LED fixtures in your parking lot.
