Dotless COB LED strip light has gone from a novelty to the default choice for any tape run people can actually see. If you’re lighting under a cabinet, along a countertop, or anywhere the strip reflects off a glossy surface, this is the construction you want. What Is COB LED Strip Light?
COB stands for chip on board, a method of LED packaging with real advantages over conventional construction.
COB packs a large number of LED chips into a small space. Combined with a phosphor layer over the strip, that produces a continuous, uniformly bright line of light along the whole length. There are no discernible dots, and none of the hot spots typical of conventional strips.
TRULUX™ Dotless COB LED Tape is impressively uniform, giving seamless light from one end of a run to the other.
Traditional tape uses SMD construction, with individual LED chips spaced along the strip at intervals. Both are good products. Here’s where COB pulls ahead.
3 Reasons to Choose COB Over SMD
1. No Visible Dots in Reflections
This is the reason most people switch, and you only notice it once the job is finished.
SMD tape shows a row of individual diodes. Run it under a cabinet above polished quartz, along a handrail, in a shallow cove or behind a mirror, and that row of dots appears in the reflection. The light itself may be excellent, but the reflection reads as cheap.

2. No Diffuser Needed
With SMD, the usual fix for visible dots is an extrusion with a frosted lens over the top. That works, but it costs you three things: the price of the channel and lens, a meaningful share of your light output absorbed by the diffuser, and the depth to fit it.
COB eliminates virtually all dotting and spot glare on its own, so the diffuser becomes optional rather than necessary. That matters most in low clearance applications where a channel with a lens simply won’t fit, which is why COB works in places SMD can’t go at all.
You can still run COB in an extrusion when you want the finished look or the heat sinking. You just aren’t forced to.
3. Even Grazing and Tighter Cut Points
Point COB at a wall or down a cove and you get a smooth, continuous wash. SMD in the same position produces scalloping, a repeating pattern of bright and dim as each diode throws its own pool of light. On a textured surface that pattern is very hard to ignore.
COB also cuts every 1.96 inches (50mm), tighter than most SMD tape. On a run that has to land precisely in a cabinet or a niche, that’s the difference between a clean finish and a visible gap at the end.
When SMD Still Wins
COB isn’t the answer to everything, and it’s worth being straight about that.
Choose SMD when the source is fully concealed and nobody will ever see the strip itself, or when you need something COB doesn’t offer. SMD covers a wider range of color options, comes in higher output packages, and generally costs less per foot.
For a hidden cove where the only visible thing is light on a ceiling, SMD does the job for less money.

That 90+ CRI figure is worth dwelling on. It’s what makes COB suitable for modern, high end lighting design across homes, small business, hospitality and retail rather than just accent work. Standard Grade, High Output, or Tunable?
The range has grown since dotless COB first launched, and there are now three directions to go.
Standard Grade COB is the value option and the one we ship most. It handles accent lighting, cove work and general under cabinet applications where you don’t need maximum brightness.
High Output COB roughly doubles the output for task lighting, longer throws and anywhere the tape is doing real work rather than adding atmosphere. This is also where the IP65 jacketed versions live for wet locations.
Tunable White COB is the newest addition, covering roughly 2700K to 6000K on a single strip. It’s the answer when a space needs warm light in the evening and cooler light for task work, and it’s become one of the most requested COB products we carry.
All three are available in 16.4 ft reels, with 100 ft reels for larger runs.
COB Pro Kits
Designed for lighting professionals, Dotless COB Series Pro Kits contain the essential installation components for a basic single color linear lighting system. Add a controller or dimmer and you’re set.
Kits speed up installations by removing the guesswork about compatibility. Each ready to install Pro Kit arrives with a reel of chip on board strip, a 24V 96W hardwire power supply and the setup components needed, supporting runs up to 16.4 feet per driver.
Pro Kits come in both High Output and Standard Grade, in 2700K, 3000K and 4000K, in IP20 uncoated versions. There’s also a lighter kit tier below the Pro Kits if you don’t need the full component set.
One Thing to Order With It
COB strip uses its own connectors, and they’re not the same as the ones for standard SMD tape.
Look for the 4mm/5mm COB versions when you’re ordering snap connectors, power feeds and jumpers. Ordering the standard Trulux connectors by mistake is the most common thing that stalls a COB install, because the strip width doesn’t match.
Budget for more of them than you think. Almost every real installation needs to turn a corner, jump a gap or feed power from an awkward spot.
