Built as part of Lutron’s RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks systems, the Lutron Lumaris tape light family brings color tunable accent lighting to a segment younger homeowners keep asking for by name.

The Lutron Lumaris tape light line exists because colorful lighting took over social media and never really left. Ask installers what affluent millennial and Gen Z clients request most, and saturated RGB color lands near the top of the list almost every time. For years that created a problem on the install side. There was no simple, affordable way to control color changing tape as part of a smart, whole home system, so integrators either priced in a separate DMX layer or talked the client out of it.

Lutron fixed that by expanding the family with an RGB + Tunable White tape and a 5 channel Multi-Channel Wireless Controller that is native to Lutron control systems. No separate control gear, no compatibility guesswork.

Lumaris tape light solutions make it straightforward to install and program layers of light in the applications where tape actually gets used: under cabinet, cove, vanity, toe kick and shelf. Both the tape and the controller were built specifically for Lutron RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks QSX, and the platform has since grown well beyond those two systems.

What Lutron Added to the Lumaris Tape Light Family

The original Lumaris tunable white tape launched at CEDIA Expo 2023. According to Rhodes Baker, Director of Product Management at Lutron, “the requests to add RGB poured in” almost immediately.

The catch was that adding color usually costs you something on the white light side, and white light is what a tape run delivers the overwhelming majority of the time. Baker’s point when the RGB tape was announced was that the everyday white light experience had to stay excellent for the handful of occasions when someone actually wants purple.

Lutron Lumaris Tape Light: RGB + Tunable White Specs

  • 1800K to 4000K tunable white range, with dimming down to 0.1%.
  • Saturated color via RGB, with 16.7 million color options through scene selection or the Lutron app.
  • 90+ CRI at 200 lumens per foot of tunable white output.
  • 5 channel engine, so color and intensity adjust independently rather than fighting each other.
  • Field cuttable every 4 inches with pre soldered wires for easier connections.
  • Available in 16.4 ft and 98.4 ft reels, with plug in and hardwired power supply options.
  • Up to 32.8 ft of tape from a single controller.

Full photometrics, wiring diagrams and installation instructions are published on Lutron’s technical document library.

Lutron Multi-Channel Wireless Tape Controller

  • Combination driver and controller, smaller than a phone and easy to tuck away.
  • Runs on Lutron’s Clear Connect Type X wireless technology.
  • Independent control of color (CCT or RGB) and intensity, plus Warm Dim.
  • Adjust color through preset scenes, automatically by time of day, or manually in the Lutron app.
  • Walk around programming and direct to device diagnostics.
  • Remote mounting with wiring terminals that accept 14 to 22 AWG wire.
  • Wiring Verification Mode confirms the wiring is right before you start programming.
  • Design Assistant in Lutron Designer answers “can this work for my project?” before you quote it.

One controller drives one run, so budget a controller for every 32.8 ft of tape on the plan.

Extrusions and Lenses

  • Lutron offers seven tape light extrusions and lenses in various depth profiles and shapes to complement the Lumaris portfolio and keep ordering simple.
  • Extrusions ship in 8 ft. segments and cut to size in the field with power or hand tools.

As Baker put it, “everything you need to do tape on a Lutron project, you can now get straight from Lutron.” For an integrator, that means one purchase order instead of three and one place to call when something doesn’t behave.

How the Lutron Lumaris Tape Light System Reduces Complexity

  1. The combination driver and controller streamlines installation, which eliminates cutting in a switch box and pulling wire to a driver.
  2. Performance between the tape and the control system is guaranteed, which eliminates dimmer to driver compatibility issues.
  3. Color temperature programs directly to system scenes, which eliminates the need for separate control gear like DMX to add tunable white and RGB.

What’s Changed Since Launch

Lumaris has grown considerably since the RGB tape first shipped, and a few of those changes affect how you spec it today.

It runs on four Lutron systems now, not two. Lumaris was designed for HomeWorks and RadioRA 3, and Lutron has since added native integration with Athena and myRoom XC. That takes the line out of the residential box and into commercial and hospitality projects, which Lutron confirmed at LEDucation 2026 alongside native Athena support for Rania and Ketra fixtures.

Lumaris is a full lighting family, not just tape. In 2025 Lutron reorganized its intelligent lighting portfolio into three tiers by light quality and budget: Ketra at the top (1400K to 10,000K), Rania in the middle (1800K to 5500K), and Lumaris as the accessible tier (1800K to 4000K). Picking a tier now sets your whole palette, and fixtures within a family match each other across form factors.

There are Lumaris downlights. Lutron extended the family into recessed lighting with 3″ and 4″ apertures in new construction, Remodeler and Retrofit versions. The Remodeler is a canless, IC rated housing that installs through a finished ceiling, and the Retrofit drops into existing cans without touching drywall or paint. The 4″ Remodeler delivers 800 lumens of 2 channel tunable white at the same 1800K to 4000K range and 0.1% dimming as the tape. Running Lutron Lumaris tape light in a cove and Lumaris downlights in the same room gets you matching light from both.

Natural Show works with Lumaris. Light that shifts with the sun through the day used to be a Ketra exclusive. Lutron has opened it up across all three intelligent lighting families, so a Lumaris project can do sun tracking without stepping up to Ketra pricing.

Rania tape is an option if you need more range. Rania Natural White tape covers roughly 1800K to 5500K, which is worth knowing about when a client wants cooler daylight tones than Lumaris reaches.

Lutron Lumaris Tape Light FAQs

What is Lutron Lumaris?

Lumaris is Lutron’s accessible tier of intelligent lighting, covering tunable white tape light, RGB + tunable white tape light, and recessed downlights. Everything in the family runs 1800K to 4000K with 90+ CRI and dims to 0.1%, and it’s controlled natively by Lutron systems rather than through separate control gear.

Which Lutron systems work with Lumaris tape light?

HomeWorks, RadioRA 3, Athena and myRoom XC, all over Clear Connect Type X wireless. No control wire needs to be pulled through the space.

How much Lutron Lumaris tape light can one controller run?

Up to 32.8 feet from a single Multi-Channel Wireless Controller. Longer runs need additional controllers.

Can Lumaris tape light be cut to length?

Yes. The RGB + Tunable White tape is field cuttable every 4 inches and comes with pre soldered wires. The 2 channel tunable white tape cuts every 2 inches, which is useful on tight cabinet runs and curves.

Do I need a separate driver or DMX controller for Lumaris?

No, and that’s most of the appeal. The Multi-Channel Wireless Controller is both driver and controller, so there’s no switch box to cut in, no wire to pull to a remote driver, and no DMX layer to add tunable white or RGB control.

What is the difference between Lumaris, Rania and Ketra?

They’re three tiers of the same intelligent lighting platform. Lumaris covers 1800K to 4000K, Rania covers 1800K to 5500K, and Ketra covers 1400K to 10,000K, with price and light quality scaling accordingly. All three integrate with the same Lutron control systems, and all three now support Natural Show sun tracking.

Does Lumaris come in recessed downlights?

Yes. Lumaris downlights are available in 3″ and 4″ apertures across new construction, Remodeler and Retrofit housings, in fixed, adjustable and wall wash configurations depending on the version.
