What is 0-10V Dimming?

0-10V dimming is a lighting control method that – on direct current voltage (DC) between 0 and 10 volts – can produce light at varying intensity levels. 0-10V dimming is the simplest control system for lighting, providing smooth operation and dimming down to 10%, 1%, and even 0.1% light level. At 10 volts, the light will go to maximum power. At 0 volts, the light will dim to its minimum light level, although sometimes a switch is required to turn the lights off completely. This easy lighting control system connects to your LED fixtures to provide flexible lighting solutions and ambiance. Dimming LED lights using a 0-10V dimmer allows you to create lighting to suit a mood or activity through a reliable technology. For example, designing an elevated atmosphere for areas like bar and restaurant seating.

Where to Use a 0-10V Dimmer?

0-10V dimming was originally developed for (and is still often used as) a standard method of controlling fluorescent fixtures, using light dimming ballasts. With recent advancements in LED technology, 0-10V dimming has evolved into a reliable LED dimming control method that is widely used. Lighting for retail, office buildings, entertainment venues, theaters, or any commercial space with dimming-compatible LED fixtures can be effectively dimmed using this system. 0-10V dimming can also be used for outdoor commercial applications that require multipurpose lighting. Products that can be dimmed include LED high bays, LED flood lights, and LED retrofit kits, to name a few. While atmosphere is often the main reason for choosing a dimmable fixture because of its multi-use capabilities, there are other benefits to using this lighting control system.

Benefits of 0-10V Dimming

One of the easiest methods to reduce power consumption is to utilize dimming in your lighting system. Because LEDs are current-driven, when the lights dim you reduce the power, and your lamps will remain efficient as a result. Using less energy not only saves you money, it also extends LED lamp life. It’s important to mention that the design of some dimmer switches causes the fixtures to continually run (albeit at a low power), even if the dimmer is turned all the way down. Today, more and more 0-10V dimmers have the ability to completely turn off light output without any additional switches; giving you much-needed control over your electrical power and fixtures. Our popular Lutron Diva 0-10V LED Dimmer is a great example. If your 0-10V dimmer does not have that ability, an additional relay or switch can be installed to avoid wasting electricity and burning out the fixture. When selecting an LED dimmer for your commercial space, 0-10V technology provides the most reliable performance and compatibility with modern fixtures.

Control your 0-10V dimmable LED fixtures with ease with the Lutron Diva dimmer DVSTV. Operates on 120-277 VAC and can be wired for single pole or 3-way. Switches up to 8 amps and does not require a power pack. Can control up to 25 drivers or ballasts. For indoor use only.

0-10V Dimming vs. Other Dimming Systems

Low voltage LED dimmers are much safer and more effective, which is why it’s the preferred method over regular or hardwire dimming. With regular hardwire dimmers, a small transformer has to restrict the watts. This usually results in flickering or an inability to dim to low levels. Regular dimmers also max out at about 100 watts of LED, which does not work for large arrangements of fixtures. 0-10V systems can easily handle thousands of watts on a single switch. So, for example, if you have 20 LED high bay fixtures running at 100 watts each, you could in theory control them on one switch (although we recommend you use more). The 0-10V minimum current requirement also ensures that you can do long runs of wires that are thin in diameter and cost less. Easy to use, diagnose, and understand, you will run into very few complications with the use of 0-10V dimming.

What do I Need for 0-10V Dimming?

Due to the characteristics of LED and the design of certain drivers, not all LED drivers are compatible for usage with 0-10V dimmers. It is important to make sure your fixture has the appropriate technologies to employ a dimmer. In certain cases, making an existing fixture dimmable is as easy as switching out the driver. With advancements in LED in recent years, we find that most LED commercial fixtures are dimming compatible. Once you’ve worked out the compatibility of your fixture, you would need to run low voltage wiring from the fixture back down to a compatible wall switch. Look for 0-10V dimmer switches like the Lutron Diva we mentioned above. The Lutron Diva is our go-to for in-wall dimmers here at PROLIGHTING.

The Lutron PowPak Dimming Module can receive wireless inputs from up to 10 Pico remote controls, 10 Radio Powr Savr occupancy / vacancy sensors, and 1 Radio Powr Savr daylight sensor.

Another option is our best-selling Lutron PowPak Dimming Module with 0-10V control. The Lutron PowPak Dimming Module is a radio frequency (RF) control that operates 0-10V controlled fluorescent ballasts or LED drivers based on input from Pico Remote Controls and Radio Powr Savr sensors. The Lutron PowPak eliminates the need to run low voltage back to your dimmer, by mounting directly to the junction box on a fixture (such as a high bay). It can control up to 8A of fixtures, and receive wireless inputs from up to 10 Pico Remote Controls, 10 Radio Powr Savr Occupancy / Vacancy Sensors, and 1 Radio Powr Savr Daylight Sensor. The Dimming Module with 0-10V control is ideal for small areas like classrooms, conference rooms, and private offices.
