Welcome to the world of under cabinet lighting. As the name suggests, under cabinet lighting refers to lights that are installed under a cabinet, resulting in illumination of the area directly below a section of cabinets. It is most commonly used in kitchen areas, where additional lighting is useful for tasks like reading recipes and food preparation.

Types

Puck lights are one the most versatile products because they can be installed in virtually any application. Most of the LED cabinet puck lights we carry at PROLIGHTING can either be installed as a surface mount puck light or recessed into cabinetry for a flush, built-in look. Every LED puck light in our online store is designed to provide smooth and uniform light output. Looking for even more flexibility? Consider an LED puck light that’s also CCT tunable — a technology that enables you to choose the color temperature to fit your preference. Many of our fixtures are also dimmable, allowing you to adjust brightness for different times of day.

Traditional-style LED Linear fixtures are still among the most popular for under cabinet lighting, and are great for efficient and uniform solutions. Also included in the LED linear family is the sleeker, slimmer LED Light Bar. The LED linear fixtures we offer at PROLIGHTING are all designed to be surface mounted and many of them can also pivot to focus lighting on other features such as the kitchen backsplash. Most LED linear fixtures come in a variety of sizes (lengths), so combined together (often referred as daisy-chained) they can cover the length of most surfaces. As you browse our LED under cabinet lighting offerings at PROLIGHTING, you can easily shop by fixture type to find exactly what you need.

LED tape light is known for its ability to be installed practically anywhere, in any application.  A flexible strip or roll of LED’s with an ultra-adhesive backing, the LED tape light we supply at PROLIGHTING goes well beyond under cabinet lighting. Installation for this super low profile lighting can vary from simple do-it-yourself kits to more complicated commercial-grade channels and components. One of the things we love about LED tape light is that it can go under you upper cabinets and the toe-kick on your bottom cabinets, creating a wow factor not possible with other products.

How many do I need? If you’re installing LED puck lights, we recommend spacing them approximately 24″ apart. For linear fixtures you can either install them seamlessly from end-to-end or leave a gap equivalent to the size of the product.

Power Sources

Low voltage under cabinet lighting (12V / 24V): Low voltage systems include two parts — the light fixture and the driver. You would typically use one driver to power several products. The advantages of low voltage under cabinet lighting is that the light fixture can often be sleeker or ultra-slim, because less components are required and the low voltage wiring is much thinner and less restrictive.

Line Voltage (120V): 120V under cabinet lighting (also called line voltage or “hard-wired”) means that no other components are required to power the product. Either the LED’s are 120V direct or a driver is integrated into each product. The advantage of a 120V product is the ease of installation — fixtures are basically plug-and-play.

Choosing the Right Driver: At PROLIGHTING, we offer a wide range of plug in (A) and direct wire drivers (B). To select the right driver, simply add up the wattage from all your lights and choose a driver with a higher wattage.

Connections

Hardwired systems are typically installed by electrical contractors. With these systems, the power feed is connected directly inside the product or driver, without any plugs therefore no exposed wires. Direct wire installation must be enclosed in a connection box with a minimal volume for a safe connection. At PROLIGHTING, all of the direct wire products we feature on our website have the connection box built into them with convenient knock-outs to discreetly pass the wiring. Plug-in under cabinet lighting options are really easy to install because they just plug directly into a standard electrical outlet.
